I've bought some activator D... how do I use it?

Water pH should be between 6.2 and 7.0

Backwash

With the motor running and valve set in filter position, empty both containers of activator D into the weir. (DO NOT pour directly into the pool)

A really neglected pool (so green the water seems thick) will need a double-dose to start off, but this will effectively kill the algae and clear the water in a few days.

Black algae will disappear after a few weeks, and should be brushed regularly to break up its hard surface to allow the activator D to penetrate to the roots.

Backwash once a week and keep the pool brushed and baskets clear. Keep alkalinity levels normal.

We recommend that for extra protection against bacteria, especially with extensive pool use and in "high traffic" pools such as hotels, schools and public swimming baths, a little chlorine should be added to the weir.

Starting 3 days after adding activator D, once weekly add one cup of chlorine per filter into the weir with pump running on "filter". DO NOT sprinkle chlorine directly into pool water - it works through the filters and will not register in pool water.

How do I calculate the volume of my pool so I know how much activator D to use?

A useful rule-of-thumb is that most pools will have a volume of roughly 1.5 x their area. This usually accounts for the average of the deep and shallow ends.

Example

1. Pace out the length and breadth of your pool L=8m B=4m
2. Multiply the 2 numbers together to get the area 8 x 4 = 32
3. Multiply the area by 1.5 32 x 1.5 = 48
4. Multiply the answer by 1000 to get litres 48 000 litres

A pool of roughly 50 000 litres will require one treatment of activator D each month.

If your pool is approximately 25 000 litres (between 20 000 - 30 000) you will only need to add half of each bottle of the activator D duo to your pool each month to keep it sparkling clean and algae free.

What's the deal with pH??

In very basic terms, alkalinity is the opposite of acidity. The balance between acidity and alkalinity is called the pH balance. Water with a high alkalinity has a characteristic "soft" feel to it.

pH can be measured with a simple kit, available at most pool supply stores. Follow the instructions on the pack. A healthy pH balance for a pool treated with activator D is between 6.2 and 7.0

If the alkalinity of your pool is too low, you might not notice any improvement in water clarity even after adding activator D. When an alkalinity boosting product is added to the treated pool, the water will clear before your eyes as if by magic!

Does activator D kill bacteria?

Yes. activator D does kill bacteria to a certain extent, and under normal conditions. activator D is sufficient for cleansing the water in your home pool, as well as keeping it free of algae.

However, activator D does not kill Ecoli (found in human faeces) and we recommend that for extra protection, especially with extensive pool use in "high traffic" pools such as hotels, schools and public swimming baths, a little chlorine should be added to the weir.
